How to Pick Out a Great Ear of Corn
Food52.com has some good tips for how to pick out a great ear of corn without committing the cardinal sin of peeling back the husk while shopping at the market:
- Search for tiny holes at the top of the ear: This can indicate the presence of worms and you definitely don’t want that.
- Check Color & Husk Tightness: If the husk is bright green and tightly wrapped – this indicates fresh corn!
- Look for Tassels: You’ll find these sticking out of the top of the corn. They should be brown and sticky to the touch. If they’re dry or black – buyer beware.
- Feel the Kernels: Be sure to run your fingers over the husk to ensure that there are plenty of kernels under it. If you feel holes or spaces where kernels should be, skip it and pick another ear of corn.
